July 25th marks the 100th Anniversary of the creation of the New York City Zoning Resolution, which was the first comprehensive zoning law ever created, and the model for zoning laws in cities and towns across the country. At the time it was a bold new experiment in both law and planning. Today zoning law controls and guides how cities grow, the shape of their buildings, and the character of neighborhoods.
The NYAIA Planning & Urban Design Committee asked leading practitioners and thinkers to reflect on this important milestone and what it means for New York City. (See the full list of contributors here.) The thoughtful and thought-provoking essays are collected on this website and reflect a wide range of ideas and viewpoints. Some call for large scale zoning reforms, while others laud the historic accomplishments of zoning law. Issues addressed include sustainability, equity, gentrification, and the promise of new technologies.
