Since 1857 the American Institute of Architects has represented the professional interests of America's architects. As AIA members, more than 86,000 licensed architects, emerging professionals, and allied partners in designing express their commitment to excellence and livability in our nation's buildings and communities.

Membership in the AIA offers a vast pool of resources to help you compete in today's market and keeps you informed of critical professional issues that may challenge your success.

AIA New York Chapter Membership Categories

Architect Member (AIA) is for those licensed to practice architecture in U.S. State or Territory.

Fellow (FAIA) is for registered architect members of over 10 years who the National AIA Jury of Fellows has honored for contributing notably to the advancement of the profession of architecture. Click here for a current list.

Emeritus Members (can be AIA, Assoc. AIA or FAIA) are individuals who have been AIA members for 15 successive years and are 70 years of age; are incapacitated and unable to work in the profession; or are 60 years of age and retired from the profession.

Associate Member (Assoc. AIA) is for those who

  • Are interns participating in career responsibilities and working toward licensure
  • Are working under the supervision of an architect
  • Hold a degree in architecture from an NAAB accredited school. (Complimentary membership is available for up to 18 months, ending on 12/31 of year following graduation).
  • Are faculty members in a university program in architecture

International Associate Architect Member (Int'l Assoc. AIA) is for those who hold an architecture license or equivalent from a non-U.S. Licensing authority.

Center for Architecture Membership Categories

Center for Architecture Corporate Membership offers firms and organizations in industries related to architecture the opportunity to become local affiliates. Three affiliation levels are available, Aluminum, Steel and Titanium. Depending on the level, 2, 5 or 10 individuals in the firm are named to receive the benefits as Center for Architecture Professional Members. (Click here for a corporate member brochure.)


Center for Architecture Professional Membership offers individuals working in an allied profession such as construction, engineering, historic preservation, interior design, landscape design, law, product design/manufacturing, etc. the opportunity to become local affiliates.

Center for Architecture Student Membership offers those who are currently a full-time student of any accredited institution the opportunity to become local affiliates. AIAS members of Accredited Architecture Schools in New York State can have complimentary membership. All students should include a copy of their School ID with the returned application.

Center for Architecture Corresponding Membership offers AIA Members in other chapters the opportunity to be affiliated with the AIA New York Chapter as well.
